I should totally go to bed!

Good morning everybody

It's quarter to 6 a.m. and I'm getting tired. "Dafuq" you ask? It's simply explained:
As a good student I'm looking for work during my summer vacation. So somehow I came to what I'm doing now, yes I'm actually earning money before you guys are even out of bed!
You might know that I'm a tall guy so one friend called me and asked if I would like to be night guard at a conference, shift: 12pm to 7am. Okay!

That conference is actually the "2013 international Biology Olympiad". As I found out, it's kind of a scientific competition, which is actually a big deal. The other thing is, the exams need to be translated into all languages and this is done during 2 out of 4 nights. So night 1 and 3 were pretty easy as nobody was around (just got really tired at 1st night). Night 2 was horrible, they finished translations at half past 5am.. (poor people) and tonight was not that bad, I think they finished around 3am or so.

What I'm doing here you ask? Nothing! I would actually need to keep an eye on the notebooks here that all delegations received but they're locked anyway so I'm more kind of decoration.

Walking around the arena I found an interesting discovery which is related to that situation:
When I started my studies we had that ice-breaking thing as we had many students from abroad. So the Chinese and Japanese people had to name one stereotype about the Swiss and all said we're accurate, I never found out what that really meant. Until tonight..

Swiss delegation's desk

Japanese delegation's desk

Interesting isn't it? I wonder if somebody did research on that..
(Sry for the bad pictures, I only had my mobile phone camera with me)

Cheers

YOLO

You might have seen the new design I'm using for my blog and maybe the new fonts, you ask me why? I say YOLO!

Today I would like to post about the word YOLO, which stands for "You Only Live Once". You can hear it everywhere and everybody is posting it and it means that you just should do crazy things because life is to short.

This won't be a long article, I only would like to express my feelings through some pictures. enjoy.

I'm sick of YOLO but the jokes about it are great!

Cheers

ROCKeteer

Every man comes to that point in his life when he wants to start up his own Bar. This might sound random to the ladies but every man knows what I'm speaking about.

It goes so far that most men even think about names for their bar.. Men! who can not even think of a name for their own child.. Men! who can not even remember their phone number.. Men! who can not even see that their girlfriend had her hair cut.

And so did I but than I reached a new level.. I wanted to start up my own party label!
Some of you might know that I sometimes work as a bartender on weekends. At the club where I work, they told us that they will have more dates available in future and then it was when I saw my opportunity.
I found parties always a little bit lame and I always thought that when I would through my part, I would mix it with a live concert. Few days later it hit me! the name for the party! I decided on calling it ROCKeteer! Now this is a long story how that name came up but I swear it felt so right when I had that name, I can not explain it but from that moment on I knew I had to do it.

It started everything one step after the other. First I wanted to design the logo, I played a little bit around with some cool fonts I found in internet. Many examples later, I was happy with the result and I though "OMG I need to show that to somebody" and so I showed it to some friends and stuff and they all found it cool. I drew a little concept plan and then I introduced it to my students council. They found it so cool that they wanted to finance (most of it) and implement it this semester and I was like.. wow! I organized a date, I got a band and a guitar player from belgium, I got 3 deejays, I got everything! I designed the flyer (with my little photoshop knowledge) and organized the printing and social media marketing (I'm such a business student, I felt like project planning), I even invented a drink for that party.

And here we are. ROCKeteer is gonna take place in 3 weeks and I'm so looking forward to it!  I can't wait! If you are in Switzerland at that time you need to come and party with us. Come straight to me and tell me that you read my blog and that you think it's cool or it sucks, whatever =)

here's the facebook event for further information: https://www.facebook.com/events/529243873780965/

This is a wake up call for every man! Guys if you wanna have a bar or throw your party, go for it! The experience is worth it!

By the way, here you have the flyer I designed:

Miss (Im)Perfect

I don’t know how I do it but I always get into interesting situations, like recently when I had a dinner with the Miss of Kosovo who is also ranked 13th at Miss Universe. How it came to that? Glad you’re asking.

A close friend of my dad made his money with a restaurant in Geneva and he is also head of the Miss Kosovo committee so he invited us two for dinner at his restaurant. My dad told me on our way to Geneva that the Miss will also join. I so wasn’t prepared for that and I hoped she wouldn’t be as I imagine a miss.
So in his restaurant my dad and I met the official photographer of the miss but he was constantly typing on his iphone.. jerk. My dad’s friend arrived with Diana (her name without any title) more than 1 hour too late and I was about to pass out that hungry as I was, so I didn’t like her.. or him.. or anybody at that moment.
Then his head chef came and proposed us a really nice menu; caprese salad with a basilica dressing as starter, fried potato’s with cheese for side, beef filet with Mediterranean vegetables for main course and for dessert he proposed a surprise which turned out to be chocolate mouse, tiramisu and delicious vanilla ice cream. It sounded like heaven in my ears but no the miss wanted to have penne siciliana, how disrespectful must it be to not take the chef’s advise when he’s willing to prepare something special and which is not on the menu. But okay..

The time between the ordering and the first course turned out to be the longest I have ever had to wait for food, not because of the preparing time but because of the conversation. Diana talked about the Miss Universe contest and how she didn’t like Las Vegas (How could you not like Las Vegas?) because of the food and the temperature and everything, then she started to gossip about every Miss from every nation on the world, which one was fat, which was short, which was a slut and which looked how ugly without make up.. OMG! I can’t stand those conversations. I was so waiting to get food so she would hopefully stop talking. Then the worst thing ever.. she started to speak about her weight. At this point I have to mention, if you’re a girl and you start to complain about your weight, you’ll never ever see me again. Finally the food came, thx god! It was so delicious! And even her food looked great but what did she do? She had 2 forks and said she couldn’t eat anymore, instead she wanted strawberries.. why to hell would an Italian restaurant have strawberries? So she wanted a fruit plate instead – ignorant little **** (who is younger than I am, by the way). I think that was the dinner where I’ve spoken the least in my life (you could actually call it: the dinner of records) I enjoyed every course and when she received a huge plate full of fruits she had only about 2 forks again and said she couldn’t eat anymore. WTF?? I knew that I had to drive back for about 2 hours but I couldn’t endure that dinner without wine and it was the only time I drank before I drove but that girl broke my nerves. Because she didn’t eat that much she had more time to speak, so she explained that she won the title Miss Photogene at the miss universe contest, which means she wins a contract with a modeling agency of Donald Trump for 1 year and she would live during that time in New York. How cool is that? But what did she do? She complained about that she will refuse that contract because she didn’t like the U.S and the food there and everything. Stupid little girl I thought.

All in all that evening was a waste of exam preparation time though I hadn’t started then yet, I’m so happy that my girl is so not like her. But that evening had a good side though.. another article for my blog.

Cheers

The Pursuit of own Limits

Why people want to challenge them self? There are people who train for years to reach a certain goal or so and I'm not only talking about sports. Yesterday I have been asking myself this but didn't come to a conclusion. Maybe people know them self better if they want to know how far they can go. Don't ask me why I did the stuff that I did, I can't explain it and yes I did some stupid things as well.

A month or so ago I hiked to Thun with 2 friends, a city that is 30 kilometres away from my place it took us around 6 and a half hours, it was really cool. Last week I wondered how fast I could manage that track, so on Saturday I decided to do pretty much the same track but instead of hiking I decided for a quick march/jog I just wanted to see how fast I could get there by my own and with baggage. When I woke up on Saturday I knew that I had to go that day. So I packed everything and prepared my track on google maps. Due to the weather conditions (we had 40 cm of snow that day) I decided to not follow the river but regular streets instead so I adapted it to pretty much the same length (around 27km).
When I told my friends that I wanted to do that, they looked at me like I was insane but to me it made totally sense and I knew that I could succeed if I only want it bad enough. Guys whenever you want to do something that you think it will be impossible go and watch that clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsSC2vx7zFQ (I listen do that sound pretty much every day).

So I started just straight away to run and I set me target to reach within 3 and a half hours. The start was good and it wasn't even that cold when my body started to heat. After about 20 minutes I had to continue on a path but the thing was that it was covered with snow, was it a problem? Hell no! I continued to run in knee-deep snow, which was really exhausting so I had to walk but I kept a certain speed. I went up and down and the maps that I had printed were not really precise so it was a little luck involved. When the routs became better I ran faster and when they didn't I ran slower to keep some energy. I don't know how far I came when I considered stopping but somehow I always motivated my self. I felt like in the arctic desert sometimes and I had some very impressive views.

The further I came the more my muscles hurt and I knew that I’d have a bad muscle ache. I was prepared for that so I had magnesium sticks with me. Every time I know that I’ll do something very exhausting I take magnesium with me. Once I had to walk just next to a main road but it was not prepared for pedestrians so I had to walk through deep snow for more than 1 kilometre and just after I got back on the street and started to run, I had this really bad calf cramp and so I stopped, I waited a moment and used this opportunity to drink some more and take a magnesium stick (I knew I would need them) I started back to run when I thought I was good, but I only came some meters when it started to hurt again. So I walked and a minute later I retried.. same thing. I mean it was not the first time that I had a cramp and it always went better after some moments but this time not, I took 3 sticks at same time as it would help something and drank plenty of water and whatever I did, it didn't help. To quit only 5 kilometres before the target? Impossible! So I did the following, I ran for some meter and walked some steps and ran some meters and walked again. This sounds so weird and it really looked weird, but it worked! Just moments later, the next thing came.. I was constantly following the map but all of a sudden, there was no path that was described in the map! So I followed the direction and ran through snowfields until I found another path (this was actually where this picture was shot). About a half an hour later, I reached my target, exhausted but happy because I discovered another limit of mine. When I looked on my watch I couldn't believe it, I did that whole course within 3 hours and 10 minutes and I thought I was so going to be late.

My little adventure was very nice, I really like to challenge myself this way. Right now, almost everything from my belly downwards hurts but it's a good pain because I look at it as a medal. No matter how many people tell me that I'm crazy (I know that I am) it was so worth it!

I actually wanted to keep that story short but it just overwhelmed me. What we learn from that is that sometimes all of us need to do something challenging because it could be a self-disclosure.

cheers

Make a Difference

Hello my dears

We all are human and we all like to hear good stories. We really appreciate it when people do well to society or open our eyes when doing something that couldn't do everybody. Let's take mother Mary, she's considered to be sent from heaven 'cause she helped civilians in war situations and many people in regions where they suffer from hunger. Or let's take Nelson Mandela, he stopped the apartheid (it's really an English word though coming from the German language) in south Africa. Or let's take that girl from Afghanistan (pity I forgot her name) that stood up against the Taliban in her blog because she was not let to school and the Taliban shot her in the head but she survived and continued blogging.

Good people always exist but we wait for them to show us where the problems are. We think that suffer is far away from us and so we can't do much but just have a look at your own place. Switzerland (where I live) is one of the richest countries in the world. I have travelled a lot and nowhere you can see what you see here. Even if you go to the countryside you'll never see "poor looking buildings" whereas in other countries, there you can see the main difference. If you are Swiss just observe the streets, how many cars pass that look damaged or old or unaesthetic? Do the same thing in Paris, it's like they bought their cars after a stock car race sold out. But if we look closer, then we see, that there are ten thousands of people in Switzerland that are poor, this is so contrasting to what we know here and many Swiss can’t imagine that.

Recently I read a story in newspaper. It was about a police officer in New York, he was on patrol and it was so freezing that he couldn't feel his feet though wearing 2 pair of ski socks and stuffed boots. While walking he passed a homeless who was sitting on the ground barefoot. He asked him why he doesn't wear any shoes in such a coldness. The homeless told him politely "Officer, I have never possessed shoes in my entire life". The policeman was so touched that he went out to buy him shoes and socks, 85$ worth and gave it to him. This is a very nice story and I felt happy that he did it but on the other hand.. isn't it a shame that such a story goes around the world? I mean, he did really really well but are we that ignorant that we couldn't imagine such a thing? Sure we could but we just don't do it! So the next day I wanted to make a change. I went to a store and bought like 7 simple cheese sandwiches (which cost me something like 12 bucks) and distributed them to the first 7 people that were begging on the street. I felt happy that I did them something good but at the same time I felt sorry that I didn't buy more because there were more people begging then I expected, it's so different if you don't look away.

What I'm try to say with that is, that you can do a difference, no matter where you are and no matter how much money you have. We shouldn't wait for the newspaper to publish that we did something good. We just should do it because we all are human and shouldn't only like to hear the good stories.

Cheers
